Orgia "Gia" Labidi is an award winning, self-taught artist influenced by her African heritage and her reverence for the divine feminine and sacred masculine energies expressed in nature. Working in various visual mediums including clay, wood, paper and found objects, she relies on intuition to ground her work in nature, humanity and the indigenous experience.
Orgia Labidi's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally for 15 years and her works are included in Old Dominion University's permanent collection, Gyeongju Art Center, Gyeongsang Province, South Korea and private collections nationwide. She is currently a Resident Artist in Anne's Visual Art Studio Gallery, Richmond, VA and Gallerie Ukwensi at Ghent, Norfolk, VA.
My artistic practice is more about the creative process and less about the finished piece. It would be inauthentic of me to say that my art
works are a deliberate reaction to the world around me. What I can say is that when engaged in the act of creating, my process is a spontaneous response to an unwavering desire to create. I allow myself the freedom to be moved by that desire, listening to and trusting my intuition regarding the dance steps the materials and I will learn in creating that thing, WE together will create. As I move though the creative process, experimenting with and learning from the various mediums the quest becomes not to create with uniformity, accuracy or perfection in form but rather to create works that are visually thought provoking.
